Not surprisingly almost nothing remains to show where the tramway once ran; except in Thones itself all the buildings have gone, and the only physical remains I could find were the stone walls of the river bridge at Morette. In Thones, however, the station building is still there as is the Hotel de Gare. What was once a narrow unsurfaced track is now a busy main road which has covered all the route of the tramway, and in Annecy modern buildings cover the site of the terminus. The old postcards are a vital resource to show show where the trams once ran.
Pas étonnamment presque rien ne reste montrer où la ligne de tramway une fois a couru; sauf dans Thones lui-même tous les bâtiments sont partis et le seul physique reste je pourrais trouver étaient les murs en pierre du pont de rivière à Morette. Dans Thones, pourtant, le bâtiment voyageurs est toujours là comme est l'Hôtel de Gare. Ce qui était dès qu'un étroit s'est non manifesté les empreintes sont maintenant une route principale occupée qui a couvert tout le trajet de la ligne de tramway et dans les bâtiments modernes Annecy couvrent le site du terminus. ANNECY.
GARE S.N.C.F. This is the station that replaced the original PLM buildings in 1981. A shame for the historian, but no doubt the public much prefer the impressive modern building. The picture was taken in January 2008.

AVENUE D'ALERY The tramway terminus was on the right, but since 1930 the whole area has been redeveloped so that it is impossible to identify the site exactly. This is not the most beautiful part of Annecy!

PLACE DE LA GARE The square here was developed in the 1930's after the tramway had closed; it ran across the scene towards Rue Vaugelas in the centre of the picture. The SNCF station is off scene to the left.

L'ECLUSE DU PAQUIER The modern theatre development has transformed this area; the end of Rue Vaugelas is off the picture to the left, and the old theatre was off scene to the right of the canal. The tramway ran across the bridge, though this is also a modern replacement of the one shown on the postcard; oddly enough the railings are still the same pattern.

DINGY St CLAIR
The bridge at Dingy St. Clare was built in 1828 and has long outlived the tramway, though it is no longer the road crossing. The main road on the left has covered all traces of the station.

The tramway ran to the right of the road where the cycle track is, but the route was a great deal narrower in those days.

THE BRIDGE AT MORETTE....the stone wall is the remains of the old bridge which was probably built in 1883 at the same time as the one in Thones.

Thones station building in January 2010, easily missed as it is now one house in a row of buildings. The single storey section on the left is a modern extension. This is the side that faced the trams.

Looking along the line of the tramway in January 2010; the road is the 'Avenue du Pont Vieux' which has been made much wider and now covers the area where the tram tracks once ran. The station building is about where the parked van is, to the right of the road, and the 'Hotel de Gare' is the building in the distance. The original narrow road was the main route into the town and ran to the left of the tramway terminus.

The Hotel L'hermitage, which was originally the 'Hotel de Gare' or Station Hotel. It stands on the Avenue du Pont Vieux, between the town & the site of the station. The building has hardly changed at all since the postcard was published.

This is the old 'Cafe de gare', to the right of the Hotel and now appartments. The building is instantly recogniseable and looks very much the same as it did a centruy ago.

This is the modern replacement for the bridge built in 1883 to replace the old bridge. It crosses the 'Torrent de Nom' and had to be crossed to reach the tramway station from the town centre.

The 'Vieux Pont', or 'Old Bridge' which dates from at least 1581 and probably a great deal earlier. Until 1883 it was the only way of crossing the river to gain access to Thones from the direction of Annecy. As the building of the replacement bridge predates the building of the tramway by 15 years, I wonder how the metal girders were transported to Thones?
